bad news mitigation, our ideas

Our ideas at Seagrove PICU Isle Of Wight. We have put together a flow chart for staff to follow to make sure that we are aware of patients who may be receiving bad news and making sure patients are able to approach staff if they have already received bad news. Our other ideas are that when we have our ward round days we will give patients the option to choose a member of staff to go into ward round with them. Then afterwards patients will be given time in a quite calm environment to discuss what has been said and make sure that the patients understood. It also gives the patient some time to vent any frustrations. It will also help other staff to know what’s gone on in ward round and make them aware of any bad news.
On Monday we will be discussing this in our morning meeting with the patients so that they are fully aware. we will be asking patients to discuss their pros and cons of how they deal with getting bad news and again encouraging them to come to staff for support. What do you think?

Hi Beckyboo! Any chance you can put a copy of your flow chart on here? Our BNM champion has been off sick for a while, so I thought we probably need to be more proactive until she comes back to work.
