I'm beginning to get very impressed at the power of Soft Words as an intervention. We've recently had a difficult time on the ward, and several staff members have identified that when Soft Words was not used where it could have been, this led to conflict situations which had very serious consequences. It's becoming clear to us on the ward that for some staff, this is the key intervention. It's funny how different staff members seem to "adopt" certain of the interventions - more than just being the champion for them - which has also worked - but also they seem to recognise that such and such an intervention is their favourite and they use it all the time! All we need to do now is to encourage a touch more reflection in those who don't use Soft Words! Just a few weeks in though, and dramatic results seem to be appearing - in spite of our longest seclusions ever!
