I'm Liz and I'm in the very fortunate position of being Project Manager for the implementation of Safewards in Dorset. We are piloting the model in four wards; two acute admission wards; a female treatment ward and a PICU.
After Geoff came and presented to staff, peer supporters and carers in December, there was great enthusiasm and excitement to take the project forward.
We are implementing one intervention per week over the next 10 weeks. One ward has chosen to start with 'Positive words' followed by 'Discharge messages'. The team are hoping to have a former service user who is a fantastic artist to paint a tree on a blank wall on the ward. The team have also adapted the admission assessment to include asking service users what things they find useful when they feel upset, agitated or anxious. This information will then help inform what will go into the 'Calm Box'.
I'm looking forward to hearing about how others are getting on with Safewards.

Am Karen ... a staff nurse in the Dorset Trust, Who has been given the role of team lead on one of the wards that is piloting safewards(Acute Assessment Unit). Currently we are looking into the section"getting to know each other" as well as positive discharge messages, and mutal agreement. I was hoping if anyone could recommennd a good audit tool that we could use to measure our outcomes, that would involve using each shift teams. Any input would be appreciated. Looking forward to rolling out the safeward model on the ward, which I believe will enhance the service users experiences and the nursing teams role/ job satisfaction,skills.
Hello everyone.
My name is Jane and I am a Mental health support worker on an acute assessment ward in Dorset. I have worked here since April of last year and prior to that I worked for 12 years in a Mental health rehabilitation unit. As the admissions there lasted from 6 months to 2 years I was able to spend a lot of time with service users exploring their needs and aspirations. The time allowed for this facilitated the ability to develop trust and mutual respect. I feel the Safewards approach will enable me to transfer my experiences there to this new challenge and I look forward to sharing outcomes here and exploring innovations made elsewhere.
